 Self-assesment essay

We are required to produce four lengthy essays over the course of the four

English writing stages. The essay on language and literacy came first, then a

research paper, a worksheet on rhetorical strategies, and finally this article, which is

a self-evaluation. These phases have not only assisted me in achieving the aims and

results of the main course, but they have also improved my writing and increased

my clarity of thought. I developed into a much more confident and expressive young

writer throughout the semester.

When I think back to the first phase, when we were given the Language and

Literacy story, I can say with certainty that I have attained the goal of understanding

the significance of language in a person’s life and how it can either affect them in a

good or bad way. For example, we read Amy Tan’s essay in class, “Mother’s

Tongue,” which suggested the importance of dialects and how language is not just a

tool of correspondence but also a social device of evaluating a person. Amy Tans

brief article introduced the difficulties of individuals whose first language isn’t English.

Amy had portrayed the issues minorities of individuals needed to look because of the

changed lingos of English. Amy’s story connects with me since I come from a family

who moved to the United States for better open doors in various fields (schooling,

way of life, work environment), very much like Amy my family had confronted similar

hardships because of the distinction in English. At the point when I clench hand

showed up in the United States, I knew how to communicate in English, yet because

of my weighty emphasize I would generally not be treated in a serious way or be

made fun off.

The most important writings from each phase were subjected to peer review.

After we had exchanged our drafts, the person sitting next to us would read them

and point out the good parts of the paper as well as make suggestions for how to

improve them. I occasionally reviewed other people’s work in high school, but not as

frequently. I was able to achieve my goal of improving my understanding of language

narrative  thanks to peer review. It was easier for me to revise my paper and clarify

my goal because I could see my writing from the perspective of the people I wanted

it to be read by. Peer review taught me to look at the paper as a whole rather than

just from one point of view.

I had already honed my writing style before enrolling in the English

composition courses. Even though I enjoy writing, this particular piece answered the

question, offered the necessary support, and never went beyond what was required

of it. In response to the first question of the rhetorical strategy assignment, we were

required to utilize one of the pieces we had read to explain the type of rhetorical

device the author had employed to capture the audience’s attention and how it had

affected or related to us in real life. In the second section, we had to create our own

arguments using the rhetorical techniques we had learned. I chose to present my

ideas through poetry { My Way To Language}. In my defense, I’m attempting to make

the case that, depending on how one uses it, language may be a powerful tool for

improving or worsening one’s quality of life. I tried to communicate my own ideas and

emotions in my short poem by saying that it’s unfair that people aren’t treated fairly

because of their various speaking styles. No matter how someone speaks or uses

language, they should be respected and valued because words enable us to

communicate with the outside world, but they can also be misused without the

proper education. Language can be a powerful tool for communication, but it can

also be used to instantly undermine someone’s self-confidence. My target audience

includes those who have just learned English, immigrants, Bengali Americans, and

parents who don’t educate their children the proper and improper use of language. I

used emotional appeal as my argumentative method. The third and final component

required us to justify the rhetorical devices we employed, including why I chose to

use poetry to convey my point that how language is used can have a significant

impact on how someone lives as well as how different cultures and ethnicities affect

how we go about our daily lives.

Remembering the third portion of the course, the Researched Paper Essay

was the main essay that was required. We were required to use and reference a

peer-reviewed paper in this essay. I had no idea what a peer-reviewed article was

before this project and assumed that all articles available online were on the same

level as “scholarly.” I wasn’t on campus that day, so I missed our first library session

in the computer lab, when we were introduced to the library, but I was able to get the

information I needed from my other students who were there. There were two

options available for this section: either we could have used four different sources to

meet the minimum requirement for the assignment or we could have used seven or

more, which seemed very simple given that I was debating a hotly debated subject,

but choosing from the thousands of articles on the internet because I wanted my

writing to be distinctive and powerful proved to be a difficult task. To achieve the next

aim, rhetorical words and methods while engaged in writing settings,” I had to

practice filling out the worksheets for each assignment in class. It improved the way I

spoke to my audience, and I can now address all of these situations in my readings

without stopping to think about it. The methods I discovered make reading much

easier.

It is reasonable to say that phase 2, when we had to create our own rhetorical

analysis using an essay, prompt, poem, etc., is when I formed the most of my writing

technique. This helped me establish a foundation for my writing abilities and improve

in many areas where I wasn’t the best. I used those abilities to help me write my

essay and draw readers in when I was writing my research report. Because we

completed so many rhetorical worksheets, I was able to recognize the many genres

and other rhetorical terms in other people’s worksheets, but I was unable to

recognize some of these terms in my own writing. For instance, we were introduced

to a number of different authors, each of whom had a distinctive writing style that

affected the way they carried out tasks like reaching the audience or formatting the

context.
