Cover letter
I am Iftekhar Muntasir, nor an expert of English literary or narrative so my
writing is solely based on my knowledge, opinions and prior experiences. Im a CCNY
student who was born in Bangladesh on December 17, 2004. My brother, my mother, and I
make up the majority of my family. In 2010, my mother immigrated to the United States,
bringing us here in 2017. This cover letter serves as an example of how individuals should
comprehend how language, and specifically how one uses language, may have a significant
impact on one’s way of living and how our cultures and ethnicities affect how we go about
our daily lives. People are frequently mistreated and misunderstood because of their race,
culture, and language, so I use my genre of poetry to share my ideas and experiences with my
audience and to make it easier for them to comprehend the difficulties that immigrants
encounter on a daily basis, including the language barrier.
I wanted to send a message through my poetry to those who don’t appreciate other
cultures and to those who don’t defend themselves when others make fun of their language or
culture and get away with it because they lack confidence. Depending on how someone
chooses to utilize language, it has the potential to either improve or decrease their quality of
life. Because they help us interact with one another and the outside world, language and a
person’s manner of speaking should be respected and treasured, but they can also be abused
without the right training. Both an effective means of communication and a speedy means of
undermining someone’s self-confidence is possible with language. the notion that we are
constantly learning and experiencing new things because of diversity, thanks to other people
and their cultures. Because of this, we ought to respect, try to comprehend, and value other
cultures just as much as our own. People frequently have special methods of doing things that
other people who were reared in different environments might not find as common.
In Mother’s Tongue by Amy Tan, she uses rhetorical strategies like ,
Narration, discrediting, description, cause and effect, problems, and definition to
express the struggles she has faced throughout time as she learned the value of
language. The 3 main rhetorical strategies i will be talking about are discrediting,
description and emotinal appeal . Amy uses the rhetorical device of discrediting
oneself at the outset of Mother’s Tongue by claiming that she isn’t an expert in
English language and literature and that, as a result, whatever she is writing is solely
based on her own experience and viewpoints. Because they feel more linked to the
author and are more engaged in the writing and the ideas Amy Tan is attempting to
convey throughout her book, the audience is swiftly drawn in by this rhetorical
device.
The second Rhetorical strategy Amy Tan uses is description with her Title
“Mother’s Tongue” which basically means native language. Amy Tan depicted the
disparities in people’s speaking styles and the values they uphold within their
families by using descriptions or accounts of a person, object, or event that are either
spoken or written. Amy Tan illustrates the various varieties of English she uses by
using descriptions in a distinctive manner of conversations she had with her mother,
while giving a speech, and with others. By using this technique, the author’s use of
“English’s” can be better understood by the reader, as can a better understanding of
how these English’s sound.
Amy Tan’s third rhetorical device is emotional appeal. Throughout the essay,
she provides examples of the harsh treatment her mother frequently encounters as a
result of her “broken English.” She describes how the stockbroker for her mother’s
company lost her checks, failed to deliver them on time, and his employer ignored
her complaints because of her broken English and this wasn’t the only time she
faced these issues which made Amy Tan realize how people were mistreated
because they were judged on the way they spoke English, That’s why Amy Tan used
emotional appeal to connect with her audience to make them understand the
hardships her and her mother went through.
The Mother’s Tongue by Amy Tan was quite intriguing to read since she
employed a variety of rhetorical techniques that might be hard to grasp unless one
reads it very carefully and can identify Amy Tan’s predicament, which she explained
in her essay. The most fascinating part of her essay was when she described how
her mother struggled with her doctor, who lost her reports and didn’t even apologize
to her due to her poor English, until Amy Tan stepped up to defend her mother and
they did because she spoke to them in proper English. She also described how her
mother had problems with her agent because he didn’t value or care about her. For
someone like myself who dealt with the same issues as Amy Tan, it was quite
moving. Amy Tan mostly employed rhetorical techniques to connect with the readers
and express her experiences and thoughts. Her target audience is primarily Asian
Americans who don’t value others because of their poor English and who aren’t
proud of the way they speak a language.
Second Part
My way to language
There’s no better way to express yourself rather than speaking
language doesn’t see race or culture, it only sees feelings and emotions
just like pets, who can’t speak but express themself through love.
languages are diverse, but carry a big role throughout people’s lives,
I look around i see different people with different heritage
with different background but all come together with language
I’m Bengali raised in Bangladesh living in the united states
times were tough but i never learned to give up,
people laughed and giggled throwing arrows through
my heart , people say the tongue has no muscle but
still holds the power to take any good one down.
language makes and breaks barrier through peoples
heart, i tell me let life be.
people come and go what stays is the harmony and
the way they communicate. love language, live language
and pass to keep language.
My argument is a trying for people to understand how language could be a great way
to make a person’s life better or worse depending on how they use it. With my short
poem i tried expressing my own thoughts and feelings i have either felt or
experienced, it’s not fiat that people aren’t treated equally due to their diverse way of
speaking . Regardless of a person’s way of speaking or language they should be
respected and valued, because words help us communicate with the world but at
the same time without proper knowledge on language people use it wrongly, and
just like language could be a good way to communicate it could be also a way of
bringing anyone’s self-confidence down in matter of seconds. My target audience is
people who recently came across english, immigrants, Bengali Americans, and those
parents who don’t teach their kids the right and wrongs of language and the
rhetorical strategy i used is emotional appeal.
2nd part
Diversity Raised Me
some say it’s diversity, some say its culture
whether people agree or disagree, but diversity raised me
I look around and faces around me are from different races and culture.
some wear thobes , some wear kurtas , some wear Jordans, some wear
flip flops but what brings us together is love of each other and respect
towards all culture ,
so, I say diversity raised me.
we all are raised differently but still find a way to connect ,
learning new things everyday from sagging, to rapping
there’s no bad culture every culture has something special
music, dance, art, food, clothes take apart our differences and connect
us
this is what i got raised into respecting and learning through cultures
and people
so, i say diversity raised me .
My argument is a trying for people to understand how different culture and diversity
have a big impact in our daily life . With my short poem I wanted spread a message
to people how diversity has led us to find and experience new things .Everday
throughout different people and their culture, so we should respect and try to learn
other cultures and value them as our own. people often have their own ways of
doing things that might not look as common to people raised in a different
environment until we take some time out and learn and accept those ways , we won’t
be able to see the beauty and diversity of other cultures. people need to realize how
diversity has been enhancing creativity and making daily life easier with different
ideas and inventions. My target audience are people who are scared to learn about
new cultures, people that are interested to learn about new ideas , people who have
a misconception about other people and their culture, also people who often get
made fun of for following their culture and try to change themself, instead they
should be proud and be willing to teach . The rhetorical strategy i used was example/
illustration.
Part 3
My goal in making this argument is to help people understand
how language can greatly affect how someone lives, depending on how they
use it, and how different cultures and ethnicities greatly influence how we live
our daily lives. People are frequently mistreated and misunderstood because of
their ethnicity, culture, and language, and my genre of poetry is a way for me to
express my thoughts and experiences to my audience, helping them to
understand the challenges that immigrants like me face on a daily basis,
including the language barrier I had with people in the United States as well as
the fact that I come from a different culture.
I chose poetry as my genre even though I had no prior
experience writing poetry. However, when I was a child, my aunt would read me
poems and I would be very confused as to what the poem meant. I would then
ask my aunt, and she would reply that every poet has a deep meaning behind
their poems and that you must read their work very carefully to understand the
meaning behind the words they use.
If you ever create a poem, be careful to include a compelling message that
encourages readers to read it. I could have utilized a variety of rhetorical
devices in my writing, but I went with emotional appeal and example/illustration.
I deliberately chose these two rhetorical devices because they both have
personal and emotional resonance for me, and because the ideas I tried to
convey in my two poems best suited the rhetorical devices’ capacity for
illustration and emotional appeal. My poem and my rhetorical techniques are
related since they have similar meanings. The purpose of my first poem was to
inform as many people as I could about how language has the power toimprove
or worsen a person’s quality of life, depending on how they choose to use it.
Language and a person’s manner of speaking should be respected and valued
because they enable us to communicate with one another and
the outside world, but they can also be misused without the proper training.
Language can be both an effective tool for communication and a quick way to
undermine someone’s self-confidence. In my second poem, I attempted to
convey the value of diversity and culture in a person’s life. I wanted to convey to
people the idea that because of diversity, we are always discovering and
experiencing new things thanks to various individuals and their cultures. As a
result, we should appreciate, endeavor to understand, and value other cultures
as much as our own. People frequently have unique ways of carrying out tasks
that may not seem as common to others who were raised in different
environments. Until we take the time to understand and embrace these
peculiarities, we won’t be able to appreciate the beauty and diversity of other
cultures. These two poems are related to both rhetorical devices since they help
my audience grasp what I’m trying to say.
